Simple Home Cleaning Tips

Crumbs on the kitchen counter, dust on the TV, gunk in the bathroom sink — We can’t stand our houses when they are a mess. But the thought of spending an entire day cleaning it from top to bottom sends me running to the sofa for a nap. After all, in a week, it’s just going to get dirty again.

Home Cleaning

Here are three simple home cleaning steps to help curb those nagging feelings:

Set cleaning to auto or leave it to the professionals

Make friends with the latest effort-saving cleaning tools and products, such as robotic vacuum cleaners and floor washers, and self-cleaning cat boxes, which rake cat poop into cartridges that you replace every week or so. An automatic shower cleaner spiffs up your shower at the touch of a button, and self-cleaning toilet bowl cleaners scrub your toilet every time you flush. We also suggest calling in a professional to help with your cleaning needs, like your rugs, carpets, upholstery and tile & grout.

Sweat the small stuff & zap the dirt fast

Clean drips as soon as they occur, before they dry or soak into surfaces or carpet & rugs. When you spill on your range top or carpet, quickly run a damp sponge over the (hot) surface – before it stains. Dust often so it doesn’t have a chance to build up and harden in corners and crevices.

Pick a focus room & clean in short bursts

Spend another 10 minutes cleaning one room. Clean a different room every day, so eventually your whole house gets attention. Look at the top, middle and bottom of the room, and pretend you’re seeing it for the first time. Tackle the tasks you don’t always get to, like removing cobwebs and dusting plants.

Post-Holiday Cleaning Tips And How To Tackle Them | Carpet, Rug, Upholstery And Tile Cleaning Longwood FL

Holidays can make even the most rational person wish the man in the red suit had a magic potion with our name on it. With all the stress of cooking, preparation, and gifting, the last thing you want is to tackle is the mess left. If no one thought to give you a gift card for maid service, here are a few ways to handle post-holiday cleaning:

From spilled beverages to plates in the sink, it’s best to deal with messes as you go. While it might seem exhausting to clean as you go, it’s a lot less stressful than facing a mountain of dishes and no clean forks. Spills are less likely to become set-in stains if handled immediately.

Post-Holiday Cleaning

However, there are always at least a few rug or carpet stains that magically appear after the holidays! You obviously want to treat any stains as soon as possible, but sometimes you don’t always notice them right away.

Like the carpets, upholstery can take a beating during the holidays from all of the use and abuse. The earlier you can treat the stains the better, so don’t leave this one for too long!

You will save yourself a lot of energy if you break down the tasks into manageable chunks. Remove the stress of post-holiday cleaning by deciding what must be done now and what can wait. Cleaning your kitchen must be done now, while making your guest bed with freshly laundered sheets can probably wait.

And although, we do try to keep up with the basic bathroom cleaning {especially in the guest bathrooms!} over the holidays, they will definitely be in need of a good deep cleaning afterwards. Scrub the tile in your shower and bath, wipe down the mirrors and the sink, wash the towels, mop the floors, and clean the toilet.

But, seriously. Holiday gatherings are all about togetherness and enjoyment of the good times. So, the last tip is this: ask for the help of a professional! Treat yourself and your family to a clean house and a relaxed environment when they next get home. That leaves time for you to get your not-so-New-Years-resolutions set into motion.

DIY Upholstery Cleaning

As much as you love your dogs and cats, they aren’t always the cleanest animals. This is especially true if you adopt them from the pound. It’s a nice feeling to save the life of an animal, but you don’t want Fido bringing home fleas. There are many products on the market that claim to get rid of fleas. Unfortunately, many aren’t strong enough to effectively kill an infestation. There is a homemade concoction using only a few ingredients that is guaranteed to keep your home flea free.

Ingredients:

  • Mixing bowl
  • 1 cup of Borax
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • A few drops of lavender and thyme essential oil (optional)

Combine all your ingredients in the mixing bowl and use a whisk to properly blend them together. The drops of essential oil are to leave your upholstery smelling good. Of course the fragrance is optional, but if you’re cleaning the house anyway, you may as well make it smell good.

Once all the ingredients are mixed together, sprinkle a dash on all your mattresses, dog beds, couches, chairs and throw rugs. Let the mixture sit on the surfaces for about an hour, then vacuum thoroughly. It will kill fleas, freshen up you home and even eliminate dust mites.

If you have a large infestation that is taking over your home, use only the Borax and sprinkle it everywhere. Place Borax on your carpet, curtains, cages and corners. Essentially, it should go anywhere your dog or cat has been.

The chemicals are extremely effective in killing fleas because they dehydrate the critters by creating cuts in their exoskeleton. As effective as Borax is, it doesn’t prevent eggs from hatching. You will have to cover your home in the chemicals multiple times to kill all of them.

In large infestation cases, allow the Borax to sit for about 12 hours before vacuuming up. As soon as you see any signs of more fleas, immediately sprinkle more Borax. You can’t risk more eggs being layed in your home.

Be Forewarned:

Remember Borax has chemicals in it, so there are risks to this cleaning method. Fortunately, Borax is much safer than other cleaning products so there is a bit less to worry about.

Don’t use if you are pregnant. There is no direct studies claiming that it is bad for pregnancy, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Either lock your animals up or take them outside of your home. The Borax powder can cause potentially fatal problems for small kittens and puppies. You should also get your kids out of the house.

This one may be kind of obvious, but keep it away from food. Borax has chemicals in it that could kill you if ingested.

Make sure that all your upholstery is dry before using Borax on it. If there is even a little dampness, the Borax can ruin the material and cause discoloration.

The most important thing to make note of: Do not put it directly on your pets. If your pets have fleas, take them to the vet to get treated. This cleaning method is for upholstery only.

Even after the fleas are gone, it is recommended that you sprinkle your home with the Borax mixture once every few months. It will keep your home fresh and even kills other insects such as ants and bed bugs.

If the Borax is not working, you may have to seek professional help. The Orlando carpet cleaners at Perfect Pear follow an intense five step cleaning process to ensure your furniture is sufficiently clean. For more information about Orlando upholstery cleaning, contact 407.688.2121.
